Hot or Hot Garbage: “Buy-Low” Candidates

Matt Hicks, Staff Writer

It’s that time of the week again: time to play Hot or Hot Garbage. It’s Week 6 and your team is really starting to shape up. If you’re at the top of your league, this is a perfect time to find a player with huge upside that’s been under performing. If you’re on the cusp of a playoff spot, buying low can be a good way to get back into the playoff picture without selling off future assets. There’s no guarantee when you buy low though, so let’s go ahead of see what players are “Hot” Buy-Low candidates (meaning make a trade for them) and which players are “Hot Garbage”.

Amari Cooper: Hot

Remember, someone likely used a 2nd round pick to get this guy. His last three games were cringe-worthy for his owners but it was against 3 great D’s (WSH, DEN, and BAL). Before those 3 games, he averaged 12 fantasy points a week. Carr’s injury is worrisome but I’m starting Cooper this week.

Ty Montgomery: Melty Cheese Hot

Aaron Jones played great against a terrible Dallas D. That doesn’t make him the starter. Ty Mont was playing over 90% of snaps pre-injury. Once he’s fully recovered he’s going to be back to his early production levels. Capitalize on the Ty Mont owner that’s a prisoner of the moment and buy-low.

Tarik Cohen: Hot Garbage

Cohen is lost within a confused Bears offense. He’s gotten just 12 carries for 37 yards the last two weeks: that’s an automatic benching in standard leagues. It doesn’t get much better in PPR: He’s got 5 receptions for just 18 yards. He could be worth a waiver claim but don’t pay anything for him.

Evan Engram: As Hot as a Room with an A/C on the Fritz

I discussed earlier this week that the TE position is a mess. That means Engram is worth trading for, if you don’t have a TE1. The Giants offense is seriously hit or miss, just like a janky A/C: you never know what you’re going to get. Don’t let one bad game throw you off, though, he’s got 19 receptions the first 4 weeks and is averaging over 11 points in those weeks.

Isiah Crowell: Garbage You Haven’t Thrown in the Dumpster Yet

Like a couch sitting on the curb, Crowell is so tempting to load up in your truck and drive off with. His volume is so high, he has to come through eventually, right…right? He’s had solid performances 2 out of the last 3 weeks, but those came against the Colts and Jets. I think he’s garbage but if you have him don’t sell him off just yet. You never know when you’ll need that lumpy, disappointing couch again.

LaGarrette Blount: Hot

Blount has very quietly reclaimed his role in Philly. He’s racked up 35 fantasy points the last 3 weeks, with at least 12 carries each week. As the Eagles offense continues to soar you’ll want to get Blount before people catch on that Wendell Smallwood isn’t a legit threat to Blount’s role.

Marshawn Lynch: Hot Garbage

I want to want Lynch, but I just can’t. He scored a season high last week, but if you take away his TD he would only have 6 points. He’s gotten more than 12 carries just once this season, and even without a healthy Carr, it doesn’t appear like Lynch will be getting a bigger role. Sorry, Lynch, you’re hot garbage.
