Is Jack Doyle this Year’s Zach Ertz?

Matt Hicks, Staff Writer

Buried at the bottom of seemingly endless pit that was the 2017 Indianapolis Colts offense, was Jack Doyle; very quietly having a great season. Doyle recorded 80 receptions, which was second amongst all TEs (Kelce had 83). Doyle’s 690 receiving yards (5th out of all tight ends) was 22% of Brissett’s total yardage in 2017. Doyle finished second for all tight ends in reception percentage (Ben Watson had 77%) catching 80 of his 107 targets (74%). Yet Doyle flew under the radar, finishing as TE 13 in 2017 because of the Colts’ lack of offensive production. To recap, Doyle’s 2017 stat line was:

80 receptions on 107 targets, 690 yards, 74% completion percentage, 4 touchdowns

Which is very similar to:

78 receptions on 106 targets, 816 yards, 74% completion percentage, 4 touchdowns

The above stat line was Zach Ertz’s 2016 season. Ertz finished as TE 6 in 2016, with 105 fantasy points and a very similar stat line. Doyle produced under a less than efficient Brissett who completed 59% of his passes for 3,098 yards and 13 touchdowns on 469 attempts. Ertz had a rookie Carson Wentz that completed 62% of his passes for 3,782 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. The improvement in Ertiz’s potential with Wentz in 2017 (3,296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns) translates equally to the improvement that Doyle’s potential has with Luck with in 2015 threw for (4,240 passing yards and 31 touchdowns).

Ertz’s 2017 ADP was 87th overall, 9th amongst all tight ends. Doyle finished as tight end 13 in 2017; but very well could be around the 9th tight end off the board (we have him at 9 in our tight end rankings). Doyle could see a similar breakout in 2018, as Ertz saw in 2017; and with the lack of productivity at the tight end production, Doyle is a risk you have to take in 2018.
